LISTEN TO LESSON 21 (SEMESTER FIVE)

Deadly Disease

TODAY’S THOUGHT

PROCRASTINATION IS THE MOST COMMON
AND DEADLIEST DISEASE AND IT’S TOLL
ON SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IS HEAVY

TODAY’S TAKEAWAYS

  • “Never put off till tomorrow, that which you can do today.”
  • Unfortunately there is no tomorrow. It can only be found in the calendars of fools.
  • Tomorrow, for them, is the day when they will begin their journey toward success and riches; tomorrow is the day they will reform, work harder, change their habits, repair broken friendships, repay old debts, apply for a better job.
  • But tomorrow never comes and countless lives that held so much promise are wasted in procrastination.
  • Success and procrastination are absolutely incompatible.
  • This procrastination business is a mighty tiresome facet of life.
  • Your “putting it off” erroneous zone is difficult to blame on outside forces. It’s all yours-both the putting off and -the discomfort you endure as a result of it.
  • Three neurotic phrases of the procrastinator • “I hope things will work out.” • “I wish things were better.” • “Maybe it’ll be OK.”
  • You can do anything that you set your mind to accomplish.
  • But by putting things off for a future moment, you are giving in to escapism, self-doubt, and most significantly, self-delusion. Your putting it-off zone is a movement away from being strong in your now, and toward the direction of hoping that things will improve in the future
  • Here is a sentence that can keep you inert, in your present moments: ”I’ll wait, and it’ll get better.” For some this becomes a way of life-they are always putting it off for a day that can never arrive.
  • Life is never boring but some people choose to be bored.
  • The concept of boredom entails an inability to use up present moments in a personally fulfilling way.
  • Boredom is a choice; something you visit upon yourself, and it is another of those self-defeating items that you can eliminate from your life.
  • When you procrastinate, you use your present moments doing nothing, as an alternative to doing anything. Doing nothing leads to boredom.

SOME TECHNIQUES FOR OUSTING
THIS POSTPONING BEHAVIOR

  • Make a decision to live five minutes at a time.
  • Sit down and get started on something you’ve been postponing.
  • Ask yourself, “What is the worst thing that could happen to me if I did what I’m putting off right now?”
  • Give yourself a designated time slot (say Wednesday from 10:00 to 10:15 P.M.) which you will devote exclusively to the task you’ve been putting off.
  • Think of yourself as too significant to live with anxiety about the things you have to do.
  • Look carefully at your now.
  • Start using your mind creatively in what were previously
  • Look hard at your life. Are you doing what you’d choose to be doing if you knew you had six months .to live?
  • Be courageous about undertaking an activity that you’ve been avoiding.
  • Decide not to be tired until the moment before you get into bed.
  • Don’t allow yourself to use fatigue or illness as an escape or to put off doing anything.
  • Eliminate the words “hope,” “wish,” and “maybe” from your vocabulary.
  • If you are putting something off which involves others (a move, a sex problem, a new job), have a conference with all involved and ask their opinions.
  • Write a contract with your loved ones in which you will deliver the goods you want to but which you may have been postponing. Have each party keep a copy of the contract, and build in penalties for defaulting.

TODAY’S INSTRUCTOR:
Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, (May 10, 1040- August 29, 2015).

WAYNE W. DYER was an internationally renowned author and speaker in the fields of self-development and spiritual growth. Over the four decades of his career, he wrote more than 40 books, including 21 New York Times bestsellers. He created many audio and video programs, and appeared on thousands of television and radio shows.

He starred in 10 National Public Television specials—featuring his books Manifest Your DestinyWisdom of the AgesThere’s a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem, and the New York Times bestsellers 10 Secrets for Success and Inner PeaceThe Power of IntentionInspirationChange Your Thoughts—Change Your LifeExcuses Begone!Wishes Fulfilled, and I Can See Clearly Now—which raised over $250 million for public television.

Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Dyer held a doctorate in educational counseling from Wayne State University and had served as an associate professor at St. John’s University in New York. Through his early work in college-level teaching and clinical psychology, he discovered a widespread need for the principles of self-discovery and personal growth, and sought to bring these ideas to a wider audience. His first book for general readers, Your Erroneous Zones, published in 1976, became an international bestseller and launched his career as an author and speaker.

After publishing a string of best-selling books on the practical psychology of self-improvement, Dyer felt a shift occur in his thinking that led him to explore the spiritual aspects of human experience. “My purpose is to help people look at themselves and begin to shift their concepts,” he said. “Remember, we are not our country, our race, or religion. We are eternal spirits. Seeing ourselves as spiritual beings without label is a way to transform the world and reach a sacred place for all of humanity.”

Dyer was affectionately called the “father of motivation” by his fans. Despite a childhood spent in orphanages and foster homes, he overcame many obstacles to make his dreams come true and spent much of his life showing others how to do the same. His main message was that every person has the potential to live an extraordinary life. What’s more, it’s possible for every person to manifest their deepest desires—if they honor their inner divinity and consciously choose to live from their “Highest Self.”

When not traveling the globe delivering his uplifting words, Dyer wrote from his home in Maui—enjoying the beauty of nature, his swims with the sea creatures, and happy visits from his children and grandchildren. In 2015, he left his body, returning to Infinite Source to embark on his next adventure.
