Jonathan Dickinson State Park

Goodness gracious, lots of rain going on in the south! I do appreciate the overcast as it keeps things cooler, and the rain keeps everything green and lush. For my drive that day I stopped several times along the beach pull offs and parks because it was raining so hard. Wasn’t able to walk the beach but a few of them I could at least watch the storm and the waves.

Also, on this day for the first time had trouble finding a campsite and it wasn’t until around two pm I finally was able to once again grab the last space at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Was trying to find something along Lake Okeechobee as I was going to start heading across the state to Venice, but all those campgrounds were full. Or something that I hadn’t experienced before, several would not take my type of vehicle.

Note to self and other travelers: if a van is not manufactured by a van company and/or is a “home-made” conversion, you may not be able to get into some parks. 😊 OR what I have found, is there are parks ONLY for class A RV’s. You know the big buses, there are exclusive clubs for those rigs only. But the good thing is, we can park in tent camping spaces and stay in great  places those other rigs couldn’t even imagine going.

So anywhoo, ended up staying on the coast at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Couldn’t complain, but it’s nothing special at the campground closer to the gate. However, there was another campground four miles into the park that was closer to the river. I drove down there and there was also a bike path that meandered all through the park, which looked like it would be fun to ride. But again, it was still raining so I didn’t even get a chance to see the river, as when I was in that area it was pouring.

However, the rain finally stopped for a few minutes, and I was able to go up to the overlook tower. When I got back down, it started raining again for the rest of the evening. So, I went grocery shopping and had a nice hot meal while enjoying the storm! Really grateful that most of these nicer campgrounds have clean hot showers too.
